Indwelling urinary catheter (IDC) is more commonly known as a urinary tube. IDC is used for patients with urinary incontinence (leakage), urinary retention (unable to urinate), or trauma/injury that affects one’s control over urination.

Indwelling urinary catheter (IDC) is more commonly known as a urinary tube. IDC is used for patients with urinary incontinence (leakage), urinary retention (unable to urinate), or trauma/injury that affects one’s control over urination.
How does an IDC works?
- The urinary catheter is a hollow, flexible tube that is inserted via the urethra into the bladder to drain out urine. A small balloon is also inflated in the bladder to keep the catheter in place. The other end of the catheter tube leads to a urine bag that is meant to collect the urine.
